Patients still using MoistureLoc despite ReNu recall

Some patients are still using ReNu with MoistureLoc in spite of Bausch & Lomb’s worldwide ReNu recall in May 2006, a Nebraska doctor says. Dr. Michelle Gleason says that many of her patients were unaware that the contact lens solution they are using poses serious health risks to their eyes. Manufacturer Bausch & Lomb issued the ReNu recall after MoistureLoc was linked to a fungal infection outbreak of Fusarium keratitis symptoms.

Users of contact lenses seek alternatives to ReNu

After it was shown that Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc can cause a serious eye infection, concerns grew about the safety of all multi-purpose contact lens solutions. Some longtime users of contact lenses might resume wearing glasses or even having laser eye surgery to overcome the issue altogether.

Iowa ophthalmologist warned of infection risk

An ophthalmologist from the University of Iowa says that she warned Bausch & Lomb of the potential infection risk created by its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. Dr. Christine Sindt says that despite her warnings, the company took no action to investigate or correct problems with ReNu until cases of the fungal infection Fusarium keratitis began to be noticed among ReNu users. Bausch & Lomb has since issued a worldwide ReNu recall.

Scientists warned of infection risks before ReNu recall

Bausch & Lomb was slow to react to the link between its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution and the fungal infection Fusarium keratitis, only issuing a worldwide ReNu recall in May. But scientists have warned for many years of the infection risks posed by multi-purpose contact lens solutions—and of ReNu specifically.

Chinese citizens planning ReNu lawsuit

Eighty Chinese citizens are planning to file a ReNu lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb in the United States. According one of their ReNu lawyers, Hao Junbo, the group claims that using the company’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution caused them to develop Fusarium keratitis symptoms. Fusarium keratitis is a potentially blinding fungal infection that has been linked with use of ReNu with MoistureLoc.

Singapore honors ReNu investigators

The Singapore Minister of Health has honored a team of doctors from that country who were the first to alert the public to the link between Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution and the fungal infection Fusarium keratitis. The doctors were given the Minister of Health Award for their vigilance and courage in taking on a multinational corporation.
