Texas teen suffers vision loss after using ReNu contact lens solution

Rey Canales, a 13-year-old boy from Alice, Texas, has suffered severe damage in both eyes after using Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. His mother, Anita, says that the damage to her son’s vision left him unable to perform even the most ordinary household tasks. “He was like blinded, because we had to walk him to the restroom, we had to walk him to his room, and we had to walk him to the table to eat,” she said.

ReNu still on sale in Ukraine

Despite a worldwide ReNu recall issued by Bausch & Lomb in May, a Ukrainian newspaper reports that bottles of the contact lens solution are still widely available in that country. The Ukrainian Observer writes that because of the virtual monopoly that Bausch & Lomb holds over contact lens solution sales in the Ukraine, it is extremely difficult for contact lens wearers to find products other than ReNu.

Study faults ReNu in fungal outbreak

A study published in the Journal of the American Medicine Association (JAMA) has found a strong link between Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution and an outbreak of the fungal infection Fusarium keratitis that hit contact lens users earlier this year. “We found that overwhelmingly MoistureLoc contact lens solution posed a high risk,” says Dr. Benjamin Park, part of the team investigating ReNu. The study reveals that ReNu users were 20 times as likely as non-users to develop an infection.

Lens wearers not at fault in ReNu recall outbreak

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that poor hygiene was not responsible for an outbreak of the fungal infection Fusarium keratitis among users of Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. Bausch & Lomb had previously claimed that poor hygiene practices by consumers contributed to the outbreak. The company issued a worldwide ReNu recall in May after MoistureLoc was linked with Fusarium keratitis symptoms in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Patients still using MoistureLoc despite ReNu recall

Some patients are still using ReNu with MoistureLoc in spite of Bausch & Lomb’s worldwide ReNu recall in May 2006, a Nebraska doctor says. Dr. Michelle Gleason says that many of her patients were unaware that the contact lens solution they are using poses serious health risks to their eyes. Manufacturer Bausch & Lomb issued the ReNu recall after MoistureLoc was linked to a fungal infection outbreak of Fusarium keratitis symptoms.
