A study conducted by researchers with the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine has found that improper temperature controls at a Bausch & Lomb storage facility may have contributed to an outbreak of eye infections among users of the company’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. The article was published in a recent edition of the Archives of Ophthalmology.

Eye disease experts say that despite recent outbreaks of fungal and bacterial eye infections among contact lens wearers, there is still a lack of effective treatments for serious infections of the cornea. Experts say that despite recalls of the specific contact lens solutions linked to these outbreaks, many lens wearers are still at risk of serious eye damage due to infection.

FDA taking steps to protect contact lens safety in wake of ReNu recall |

More than three years after the contact lens solution ReNu with MoistureLoc was recalled, the Food and Drug Administration has taken a number of measures to ensure the safety of contact lens wearers. ReNu with MoistureLoc was withdrawn from the market in May 2006 after it was linked to a type of fungal eye infection known as Fusarium keratitis.

Bausch & Lomb has paid $250M so far to settle ReNu lawsuits |

Bausch & Lomb, the manufacturer of ReNu with MoistureLoc, has settled nearly 600 lawsuits filed by former users since the contact lens solution was recalled in 2006. A report by the Associated Press states that the company has spent $250 million to settle ReNu lawsuits so far. Experts estimate that the company could end up spending as much as $500 million in settlements and other expenses stemming from the ReNu recall.

A new study has found that improper temperature control during the production of Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution may have been responsible for an outbreak of fungal eye infections among patients who used the product. The study also found that ReNu was less able to properly disinfect contact lenses after being exposed to high temperatures compared with several other contact lens solutions.

A new study has revealed that Bausch & Lomb failed to test its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution on the kind of microbes found in the real world. Due to this inadequate testing, the company did not figure out that ReNu with MoistureLoc was unable to kill a dangerous type of fungus until hundreds of users had already become infected and begun to suffer ReNu side effects.
