Bausch & Lomb admits it knew of ReNu infection link

Bausch & Lomb now admits that it was aware of the link between its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution and the dangerous eye infection Fusarium keratitis in November 2005. The company says that it was notified by health officials in Hong Kong about a growing number of infections among ReNu users.

Number of eye infection cases rises

New figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention place the number of confirmed or suspected cases of the fungal eye infection Fusarium keratitis at 176. Previous CDC figures placed the number of infections at 109. The agency also said that it has observed cases in 28 states, up from 17 in the previous figures.

FDA says ReNu plant was cited for violations in 2002

The Greenville, South Carolina plant where Bausch & Lomb manufactured ReNu with MoistureLoc was cited for quality control problems in 2002, according to newly uncovered documents from the Food and Drug Administration.

Optometrists agree with ReNu recall

Doctors from the American Optometric Association (AOA) have voiced their support for Bausch & Lomb’s decision to voluntarily pull its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution from stores in the United States. ReNu with MoistureLoc has been linked with outbreaks of the potentially blinding fungal infection Fusarium keratitis in the U.S, Europe and Asia.

Bausch & Lomb will not suspend ReNu sales in Malaysia

Bausch & Lomb has announced that it will not suspend sales of its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution in Malaysia. The company’s decision not to suspend sales or issue a ReNu recall comes despite an outbreak of the fungal infection Fusarium keratitis in Singapore and Hong Kong among ReNu users. Health officials in Hong Kong notified Bausch & Lomb in November 2005 of a possible link between ReNu and an increased number of Fusarium infections.
