Professional race car driver Terry McMillen has filed a ReNu lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb. McMillen alleges that using the company’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution caused him to develop the fungal eye infection Fusarium keratitis, forcing him to miss a year of racing. Shortly after earning his license to race in the Top Fuel drag racing league, McMillen was diagnosed with Fusarium keratitis, a potentially blinding eye infection that has been linked with the contact lens solution. As a result of his eye infection, McMillen was forced to undergo a cornea transplant in order to repair the damage to his eye. About one-third of Americans who contracted Fusarium keratitis after using ReNu with MoistureLoc have been forced to undergo a transplant to repair cornea damage. McMillen’s doctors advised him to sit out the 2006 racing season while he regained vision in his eye. Although he has been allowed to return to the track, doctors must check McMillen’s eye after each race. After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked about 150 cases of Fusarium keratitis to ReNu with MoistureLoc , Bausch & Lomb was forced to issue a ReNu recall in May 2006. Many of these patients have filed ReNu lawsuits against the company, alleging that it did not act fast enough to issue the ReNu recall after patients began developing Fusarium keratitis symptoms. |
