Chinese citizens planning ReNu lawsuit
Tuesday, 11 July 2006
Eighty Chinese citizens are planning to file a ReNu lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb in the United States. According one of their ReNu lawyers, Hao Junbo, the group claims that using the company’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution caused them to develop Fusarium keratitis symptoms. Fusarium keratitis is a potentially blinding fungal infection that has been linked with use of ReNu with MoistureLoc.

Hao says that Bausch & Lomb should be held liable for the injuries suffered by the group because it failed to inform Chinese consumers of the health risks linked to the ReNu contact lens solution when they were reported by Singaporean officials in the Fall of 2005. Singapore issued a health warning in February 2006 about the risk MoistureLoc users faced of developing Fusarium keratitis symptoms.

So far there have been 122 confirmed cases of Fusarium keratitis in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these, the majority were users of ReNu with MoistureLoc. Bausch & Lomb issued a worldwide ReNu recall in May 2006 because of the link between ReNu with MoistureLoc and Fusarium infections.

So far, no trial date has been set for the Chinese ReNu lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb. Several ReNu lawsuits have already been filed in the U.S. against the company by ReNu users who also claim that their Fusarium keratitis symptoms were caused by the contact lens solution.
